Should I Do My Own Billing in Private Practice?
(plus a helpful flow chart to help in your decision making)
When starting their own practice, every therapist is faced with a choice: Do I do my own billing, or do I hire someone to do it for me? Of the many decisions involved in starting a practice, this is the one that people are most anxious and uncertain about. I went through the same thing when I started my business. After consulting with all of two people about it, I decided to save some money by trying to do it myself. Spoiler alert: It did not work out that way. I ended up hiring a billing assistant a month later and never looked back - except to warn others.
Disclaimer: I’m not here to tell everyone that they should just hire billing help. I don’t know what’s right for you - My goal is to give you the information you need to make your own informed decision. There are pros and cons to both, and there are strategies that suit some better than others. There’s no right or wrong way to do it - it only matters what’s right for you. I’ve even included a flow chart at the end to help you figure out what that might be.
(Note: I’m only comparing doing billing by yourself vs with the help of an individual specialist. I can’t speak to the use of larger companies or billing software, as I have not utilized those resources.)
