I know it’s been awhile since I last posted - but I have good reasons, I swear! I may not have been writing here, but I’ve been hard at work on other things that you might find useful. I’m really excited to finally share it with you all.
For the past year, I’ve done a lot of soul searching as to how I’d like to share information and content with the world. I have such a passion for sharing what I’ve learned in this field - the good, the bad, and the ugly - but wasn’t sure how to get it out there. I don’t want to be a YouTuber or a TikToker, I have too many ideas to fit into a book, and way too many to fit in a blog. So, after much deliberation, I’ve decided to enter the world of online course creation.
Now before you roll your eyes, please read the following.
With my courses, I will NOT be:
charging thousands of dollars
claiming to have the perfect cure-all solution to all your problems
engaging in MLM-style sales tactics
I will, however:
charge what my time/experience is worth while still making it accessible (and offering deals, sales, and coupons when possible)
offer a mix of specific and general advice, where you can take what is helpful for you and leave the rest
use straightforward and simple strategies to reach my desired audience
If you’re still skeptical, let me share with you why I chose this method:
It’s less work/less risk and has more reach than writing a book
It doesn’t require me to film myself or do tons of video editing (but I don’t mind recording audio)
I’m able to create content for a wide variety of topics
The up-front work is manageable, and it requires less work over time (rather than requiring constant posting and creation to beat an ‘algorithm’)
It allows me to share lots of information at an accessible price, without giving it away for free.
Some people may think, “But why CAN’T you give it away for free? It’s just information! Therapists don’t make that much, you shouldn’t charge them for things.” I hear you. But as skilled professionals and businesspeople, we have to consider how much time and effort it took to gain that knowledge, as well as the time and effort it takes to share it. The fact is, many of us are not in a season of life where we can put in hours and hours of work for free. I applaud anyone who can, and I hope to get there someday. I’ll touch on this more in a future post, but just wanted to address it briefly here.
Now, I’m not banking on this as a main source of income, so my approach will be diligent but casual. There will be no spamming, no grandiose claims/promises, and no dangling of a magical carrot. My intention for doing this is the same reason I do therapy: To help people while being paid enough to support my family. I have no intention of building a crazy empire or moving away from seeing clients (at least not completely). I simply want to share what I’ve learned about private practice, client work, burnout, and the ever-so-strange process of becoming and being a therapist.
I’ll create another post in the next week or so with more information, but you can expect to hear about five different courses (plus one that is designed for organizations). I’m working on timelines and finalizing the details, but at least two of them will be ready to launch pretty soon. Stay tuned for more info, and thank you for sticking around!
