How I Track "Productivity" in My Practice
Plus the one mindset shift that reduces the pressure I put on myself/my schedule
Looking at weekly numbers was drilled into me from the beginning of my career, starting with tracking internship hours, licensure hours, and as part of my previous jobs. How many did you schedule? How many did you see? Why wasn’t it higher? (At one point we may have had to write our numbers on the board in staff meetings, and were publicly compared to our colleagues/mildly shamed for low numbers, but I won’t get into my feelings about that.)

I’ve tweaked how I do this quite a bit over the years, and I finally feel like I’ve got a good system. So I’ll share a little bit about my low-maintenance method for tracking client numbers, as well as mental shifts that have helped me accept imperfect weeks and strategize for the future. I also made one recent change in how I do this, which has helped take a lot of pressure off myself and my schedule.
